There is a particular kind of anxiety that hits small business owners when the weather forecast turns deep blue and winter storm warnings start scrolling across the screen. For an e-commerce business like ours at Undique, connectivity isn't just a utility; it’s our open sign, our cash register, and our lifeline.

In years past, heavy snow or severe wind meant nervously watching our modem lights. We used to rely on a traditional fiber broadband connection for the office. On paper, it was great: a promised 1GBIT bandwidth. In reality, we rarely saw those speeds, yet we were paying over $99 a month for the privilege.

Worse, when the inevitable winter outage hit, we were scrambling, tethering critical business operations to a mobile phone hotspot and praying the cellular towers weren't overloaded. It was expensive, stressful, and far from professional.

Last year, we decided we needed to sleep better during storm season. We needed redundancy, but as a small team, we couldn't afford enterprise-grade failover systems. We had to get creative.

The Shift to Affordable Resilience

We completely overhauled our connectivity strategy, focusing on flexibility and actual reliability rather than empty promises of gigabit speeds.

First, we cut the fiber cord. Our primary connection is now an Unlimited T-Mobile Home Hotspot. It handles our day-to-day operations smoothly. The cost? A flat $45 a month. Even better, utilizing our Amex Business Platinum benefit knocks another $10 off, bringing our primary internet cost down to just $35 a month.

But a primary connection isn't redundancy. That’s where the game-changer came in: Starlink.

We purchased a Starlink Roam kit to serve as our ultimate backup. We keep it on their standby ("paused") plan for just $5 a month. In this standby mode, it provides just enough bandwidth for very modest web browsing and essential emails—barely a trickle, but it’s a live connection.

The magic happens when our primary internet goes down. Within minutes, we can log into the Starlink app via that trickle connection and upgrade instantly to a full bandwidth plan for the duration of the outage.

Peace of Mind and Mobility

This setup has changed everything. When the wind howls outside now, we sleep well, knowing our online e-commerce business will stay online.

There was an unexpected bonus to this setup, too. Because both the T-Mobile hotspot and the Starlink are portable, we have reliable, powerful connectivity with us whenever we choose to travel. The office is wherever we set up our hardware.

For solo entrepreneurs, digital nomads, or small teams, you don't need thousand-dollar service contracts to ensure business continuity. This low-cost setup delivers peace of mind with redundancy built right in. We’re never going back to the old way.
